About Loreweaver

What this is

Loreweaver is a character creator for the fifth edition of the world's most played tabletop roleplaying game. Most tools start with the mechanics and ask you to fill in a story afterwards. This one starts with the person: who they were before the adventure, what they lost, what they are still arguing with. The numbers follow from that.

You can build a character entirely by hand, choosing every option yourself, or let the interviewer ask you about your character and assemble a legal sheet from your answers. Both routes end in the same place: a complete character sheet you can edit, save and export as a PDF.

What it is built on

Every rule, class, race, background, spell and item in Loreweaver comes from the System Reference Document 5.1, published by Wizards of the Coast under a Creative Commons licence. That is a deliberate limit, not an oversight. It means the twelve SRD classes are here and the ones that are not published in the SRD are not, and it means a handful of famous spells are missing because they were never released under that licence.

Loreweaver is not affiliated with or endorsed by Wizards of the Coast. Where a rule is ambiguous, the tool follows the SRD as written rather than any particular table's house reading.

What costs money

Building a character by hand is free, unlimited, and needs no account. Saving your characters, editing them, levelling them up and exporting a PDF are free too. So is homebrew: any signed-in account can write its own spells, weapons and armour, up to twenty entries.

A subscription buys the AI interviewer, which is the part that genuinely costs money to run, along with room for five hundred homebrew entries and the ability to import and export them in bulk. Subscribing starts with a 30-day free trial, and a card is required to begin it. If it is not worth it, nothing you already made is taken away.

Who publishes it

Loreweaver is built and run by the Loreweaver team, a very small independent operation rather than a company with a marketing department. It is funded by subscriptions and by advertising on the guides.

If something is broken, wrong about the rules, or you just want to tell us what the tool got hilariously wrong about your character, we would like to hear it. Write to us on the contact page.

The guides

Alongside the tool we publish free guides to character creation: how the process works, what to settle at session zero, how to read your sheet, and a build guide for each of the twelve SRD classes. They are written to be useful whether or not you ever use Loreweaver itself. Start at the guides index.
