How to read a 5e character sheet: what every number means and where it comes from

The sheet is a tree, not a list
A first look at a 5e character sheet suggests forty unrelated numbers. It is actually about eight numbers and a lot of arithmetic. Six ability scores and your level generate nearly everything else on the page, which means the sheet is a tree: change a root, and the branches update. Once you can see the tree, the sheet stops being homework and becomes a reference card you barely need.
Start at the roots. Each ability score (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma) has a modifier printed next to it, and the modifier is the number the game actually uses; the score itself almost never appears in play. The modifier is the score minus ten, halved, rounded down: a 16 is +3, a 10 is +0, an 8 is -1. If you take one thing from this guide, take this: when the sheet asks you to add an ability, it means the modifier.
The other root is your proficiency bonus, which depends only on level: +2 at levels 1 to 4, then one more for every four levels after (+3 at 5, +4 at 9, +5 at 13, +6 at 17). It is the game's way of saying "you are trained at this", and it gets added to exactly the things you are trained in: your class's weapons, your trained skills, your two saving throw proficiencies, and your spells.
Saving throws and skills: modifier, plus training if you have it
Every saving throw on the sheet is the matching ability modifier, plus your proficiency bonus if your class grants proficiency in that save. Each class grants exactly two, and the little filled-in dot next to a save is the entire explanation for why your Dexterity save is +5 while your Wisdom save languishes at +0. Those two dots are also a quiet warning label: the saves without them are where your character is soft.
Skills work the same way with one extra wrinkle. Each skill keys off one ability (Stealth from Dexterity, Persuasion from Charisma, and so on). Untrained, the skill is just the ability modifier. Trained (from your class picks or your background), add your proficiency bonus. A few classes go further: expertise, the rogue and bard specialty, doubles the proficiency bonus on chosen skills, and the bard's Jack of All Trades adds half the bonus (rounded down) to every check that would otherwise get nothing, including initiative.
This is why two level 1 characters can sit at +7 and -1 on the same skill: 16 Dexterity, Stealth proficiency, and expertise stack to +7, while 8 Dexterity and no training sits at -1. Nothing mysterious happened. The tree just branched differently.
The defence block: AC, hit points, initiative
Armour Class is the number an enemy must meet or beat to hit you, and it is computed as a best-of. Unarmoured, you are 10 plus Dexterity modifier. Armour replaces that: light armour is its base AC plus your full Dexterity modifier, medium caps the Dexterity you can add (usually at +2), heavy ignores Dexterity entirely. A shield adds 2 on top of any of these. Some classes have their own unarmoured formulas (a barbarian adds Constitution, a monk adds Wisdom), and your sheet simply shows whichever computation came out highest.
Hit points are your level 1 hit die maximum plus Constitution modifier, then one instalment per level after that: a roll of your hit die (or the fixed average, half the die rounded up) plus your Constitution modifier again. This is why Constitution is the one ability nobody dumps; it is a tax on every level you will ever gain. The hit dice entry next to your HP (something like 3d8) is a separate resource: dice you can spend during a short rest to heal.
Initiative is just your Dexterity modifier, and it decides where you act in the combat order. Speed comes from your race, usually 25 or 30 feet, occasionally boosted by class features when unarmoured.
The attack block: where to-hit and damage come from
Each attack line is two numbers built the same way every time. To-hit: the weapon's ability modifier, plus proficiency bonus if you are proficient with that weapon. Damage: the weapon's die plus the same ability modifier. Melee weapons use Strength and ranged weapons use Dexterity, with one famous exception: finesse weapons (rapiers, daggers, shortswords) use whichever of Strength or Dexterity is better for you, which is how a wiry duelist outfences a blacksmith.
Casters have a parallel pair: the spell attack bonus is proficiency plus casting ability modifier, and the spell save DC (the number enemies roll against to resist you) is 8 plus proficiency plus the same modifier. Notice that all four attack numbers grow automatically when your proficiency bonus ticks up at levels 5, 9, 13, and 17. You never earn them separately; they are branches of the same tree.
- Weapon to-hit: ability modifier + proficiency (if proficient).
- Weapon damage: weapon die + the same ability modifier.
- Spell save DC: 8 + proficiency + casting ability modifier.
The three numbers that matter at the table
In an actual session, most of the sheet is scenery. Three numbers do the work: your main attack's to-hit (or your spell save DC if you mostly cast), your Armour Class, and your current hit points. Between them they cover ninety percent of combat turns. Know those three cold and you will never hold up the table, whatever else you have to look up.
A useful fourth is passive Perception, tucked in a corner of most sheets: 10 plus your Perception skill bonus. You never roll it; the DM checks it silently to decide what you notice, which makes it the number that is always on even when you are not.
The deeper habit this guide is really selling: whenever a number on your sheet surprises you, trace it back to its roots. Ask which ability feeds it and whether proficiency applies, and you will nearly always rebuild it from scratch in ten seconds. A sheet you can rebuild is a sheet you understand, and a player who understands the sheet gets to spend the session thinking about the story instead of the arithmetic.
